Working an aluminum composite panel at the shop: cutting and machining

Cutting and machining an ACP panel, in the shop.

One of the great strengths of the aluminum composite panel: it works with the tooling already in most shops — no specialized machine, no mandatory outsourcing. This guide covers cutting, drilling, edge finishing and the habits that separate a clean job from a ruined piece.

Cutting

The right blade
does all the work.

The ACP panel cuts on a circular saw — table or handheld — with a fine-tooth carbide-tipped blade, of the aluminum/plastics type.

Carbide blade, fine teeth

The winning combo for a clean edge without burrs. A coarse-tooth blade tears the core and leaves a chewed edge — the same principle as cutting polycarbonate or thin aluminum.

Decorative face up

On a circular saw, the blade enters from below: cut with the decorative face up so any micro-chipping happens on the hidden side.

Film stays on

Keep the protective film on through all cutting and machining. It protects the matte PVDF finish from scratches and chips. Remove it only when installation is complete.

Standard bit, no hammer

A standard metal bit goes through the panel's 4 mm without forcing. No hammer action, no brute pressure: the PE core compresses, the skin won't crack.

↳ TORQUE

Moderate tightening

Rivets and screws go in without excess: overtightening dents the skin and leaves a visible ring around the fastener. A washer spreads the load.

Finishing

What to do with a cut edge when it stays visible? Three approaches, depending on the result you want.

Own the raw edge

On a 4 mm edge seen face-on, a clean carbide cut often speaks for itself — especially in matte black.

Refine the edge

A fine file or plane gives a smooth edge for close-contact fit-out pieces (counters, display panels).

Hide the edge with a fold

The architectural solution: route and fold a return that conceals the cut. Standard on façades, corners and sign cassettes.

Organization

Organizing the cuts
of a job.

Cutting is prepared at the bench, not at the panel. Three habits that cut waste and ruined pieces.

First, the cut plan. A panel layout drawn before the first cut — returns, openings, orientation — avoids buying one more panel "just in case". On a façade, the waste margin depends on the drawing: large regular pieces waste less than many small boxes.

Then, the cut direction. Always decorative face up, film on, and a table long enough to support a full 4×8: a panel that bends off the table tears the edge as it leaves the blade.

Finally, sorting offcuts. Wide offcuts keep their value for returns, trims and routing test runs — keep a clean stack; the bending guide will use a few to set the depth before final pieces.

A perfectly flat surface, a matte PVDF finish that grips ink, a 4×8 format compatible with print tables: the composite panel is the historic substrate for wide-format printing and vinyl lettering. The surface needs no special preparation — the protective film comes off just before application, and the panel goes straight to installation without touch-ups.

What saw should I use to cut an aluminum composite panel?

Can I drill an ACP panel without cracking it?

Yes. The composite panel drills with standard metal bits, without hammer action or aggressive support. Don't overtighten fasteners: excessive torque deforms the skin and marks the finish.
