The weight of an aluminum composite panel (ACP/ACM) shapes three things on a job site: handling, shipping and the load carried by the structure. This guide explains why the sandwich panel is light, what that means in practice — and where to get the exact number for your calculations.

Why the ACP panel
is light.

The light weight comes from the sandwich construction: two 0.5 mm sheets of 5005 aluminum bonded to a polyethylene core, for a total thickness of 4 mm.

In a composite panel, stiffness doesn't come from aluminum mass — it comes from geometry. The PE core holds the two skins apart and gives the panel its moment of inertia, the way an I-beam carries load with less material than a solid section. The result: at comparable rigidity, a composite panel is significantly lighter than a solid aluminum sheet — and it won't warp.

The Ahlum panel follows the standard market construction: two 0.5 mm 5005 aluminum skins, a polyethylene (PE) core, 4 mm total thickness, matte PVDF finish on the exposed face. Light doesn't mean flimsy: the surface stays flat and rigid, even in the large 5×10 format.

Handling

A 4×8 panel (32 sq. ft.) can be handled by two people in most cases, wearing clean gloves to protect the matte PVDF finish. The 5×10 format (50 sq. ft.) demands more care in the wind.

Shipping

A pallet represents about 3,000 sq. ft., roughly 94 4×8 panels. Pallets ship and store flat, protected — 1–3 days processing at the Dorval warehouse, 2–5 days transit.

Structural load

In renovation as in new construction, a light cladding puts less demand on the framing than a heavy facing. The load calculation remains the responsibility of the project's architect or engineer.

A pallet represents about 3,000 sq. ft., roughly 94 4×8 panels; two pallets, about 6,000 sq. ft. Processing takes 1–3 days at the Dorval warehouse, transit 2–5 days to most Canadian destinations. In the Montreal area, delivery is local and pickup by appointment is free.

For on-site storage, the habit is the same as for any cladding panel: store flat, indoors, raised on battens, and handle with two people without ever sliding the decorative face across another surface. The protective film stays on until installation — that's what protects the finish through shipping and handling.
